Federal election 2015: More than 20,000 Islanders voted in advance polls

Elections Canada says an estimated 22, 068 people voted in the advance federal election polls on Prince Edward Island.

That's up considerably from the 13,201 people who voted in advance polls in P.E.I. during the 2011 general election.

Cardigan had the highest number of advanced voters with 5,847 electors voting in advance polls, followed by Malpeque with 5,651, Egmont at 5,544 and Charlottetown with 5,026.

Across Canada, more than 3.6 million electors voted at the advance polls, a 71 per cent increase over the number of people who voted in advance in the 2011 general election.

Elections Canada said the increase was due in part to an additional advance voting day on Sunday, which was offered for the first time.

All numbers will remain unofficial until they are validated after the election on Oct. 19.
