George Diercks is one step closer to building a resort in Greenwich. Two environmental groups have withdrawn an appeal of the preliminary approval given to the project.

The Canadian Nature Federation and Earth Action had asked the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission to postpone development in eastern P.E.I.

The groups appealed the decision saying it was worried about the overall impact on the sensitive dune system.

After two days of negotiations, and before a public hearing, the federation decided to let the developer move ahead.

Diercks has agreed to ensure sensitive species and habitats are protected.

"It's a big step," Diercks said after finding common ground with the environmentalists. "The next step is get my engineers together, architects, start designing buildings and start doing surveys."

Earth Action withdrew its appeal of the project on July 23.
