Cornwall Perimeter Highway route chosen by P.E.I government

The P.E.I. Department of Transportation announcedthe routefor theCornwall Perimeter Highway ahead ofameeting with landowners in Cornwall, Wednesday night.

The perimeter highway will begin at the York Point Road intersectionwith the Trans-Canada Highway and will continue west along the northside of Cornwall and will then joinback to the existing TCH inClydeRiver.

Construction on the new highway will begin in 2017 with completion expected in two years.

Work began Tuesday to build two roundabouts in the North River area through toMaypoint.

Many factors in decision

Transportation,Infrastructure and Energy Minister PaulaBiggar said the selection of the route was based on a numberof considerations. They includedenvironmental andsocio-economicfactors, as well aslandowner consultations.

"Several potential routes for the new highway were considered andthoroughly assessed by an independent consultant," said Biggar in a release.

"This strategic infrastructure investment will be constructed totoday's safety standards, improve the transport of goods, and benefitIslanders."

There will be apublicinformation session in Cornwall Sept.13 at 7 p.m.

Biggar said the Town of Cornwallendorsed the selectedroute of the bypass.
