The Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island was closed earlySunday to accommodate thousands of runners expected for the annual Terry Fox Run.

The bridge closed at 6 a.m. and Laurel Lea with Strait Crossing said it will impact some travel plans.

"We're encouraging people that do need to travel during that time to make alternate arrangements or to shift their travel schedule a little bit," she said.

The bridge will reopen at 1 p.m. and although closures like this are rare, Lea said the 35th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run is a worthy exception.

"We think that this is an appropriate event to temporarily shut down for," she said.

Participants are able to start from either New Brunswick or P.E.I., and will be given the option of crossing the entire 12.9 kilometre length of the bridge.

About 5,500 people are participatedin the event.
