Spill in downtown Charlottetown leaves behind 'fairly rank' odour

Charlottetown city workers were called to a smelly job in the downtown Friday morning cleaning up what's described as a very stinky spill.

Public works responded after the city received complaints about the odour, and discovered the source was some sort of liquid spilled on Grafton Street between Queen and Pownal streets.

"Nobody is able to tell us where the source of it might have been, be it a vehicle that was driving by with something falling off or whatever it might have been. We're not sure," said public works manager Paul Johnston.

"I haven't been there myself. I'm just hearing that it's fairly rank."

Workers at the site said they suspect a spill from a garbage truck.

Without witnesses, Johnston said, it's unlikely the city will find out exactly what happened.
