Charlottetown gets $1M fire truck

Charlottetown's fire department has taken delivery on the province's first fire truck with an aerial platform.

The truck cost the department $1 million.

Deputy fire chief Tim Mayme told CBC News the truck gives the department a number of new capabilities, in addition to the platform that can be raised 30 metres into the air at the site of a blaze.

"It's just a step above and more capabilities as far as emergency response goes," said Mayme.

"It's got a bigger capacity both foam system and water pump system so with the aerial platform it has that stability factor."

Officials with the company that sold the truck to the city have been training firefighters this week.

The public will have a chance to see the aerial platform truck this weekend. Firefighters will be 30 metres in the air on the platform for 36 hours beginning at noon Friday at the Sobey's on Allen Street as a fundraiser for cancer research.
