Boardwalk near Charlottetown's Harbourside Complex to get safety upgrades

A 30-metresection of boardwalk nearthe HarboursideComplex in Charlottetown will get some safety and lighting upgrades.

The repair work was announced on Wednesday by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, which will invest $120,000. The Charlottetown Area Development Corporation, which owns and maintains the Harbourside Complex, will match that for a total of $240,000.

The seawall underneath the boardwalk is wearing down and will be repaired. In addition, 20 light fixtures will be replaced with energy efficient bulbs.

The funding is announced under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

"I am pleased to announce funding through CIP 150 for CADC to carry out this infrastructure improvement project," said Charlottetown MP Sean Casey in a statement.

The boardwalk connectsCharlottetown Cruise Ship Terminal, Peake's Quay and the PEI Convention Centre boardwalks to the Charlottetown Yacht Club, the Armories and the Victoria Park boardwalks.

"It is a well-traveled path enjoyed by Islanders and visitors alike and its safety will be ensured for many years to come," Casey said.
