Burn victim in early morning blaze tried to douse grease fire

One person was sent to hospital after an early morning fire Thursday at a Charlottetown apartment complex.

Charlottetown fire Chief Randy MacDonald said the fire was located in a bathroom of an apartment on the second floor of the building, across from the Eastlink Centre on Kensington Road.

According the fire chief, the fire started in a pot of grease in the kitchen.

The man suffered burns to his arms, chest and head after he took the flaming grease to the bathroom to douse the flames.

He was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with what the fire chief describes as non-life threatening injuries.

The bathroom was gutted and the entire apartment heavily damaged by smoke.

Restoration crews were on scene mid-day to contain water damage and begin repairs.

Crews on scene for several hours

The Charlottetown Fire Department was called to the location around 5 a.m.

Residents were forced outside while firefighters worked on the building, which included using large fans to clear the air in the building. Crews were on scene until 7:30 am.

Seven people livein the six apartment units and have been allowed back in.

The building also containstwo office units. Atlantic Peoples Housing was undamaged and is open for business today. The other officewas damaged by water.
