Woman who gave birth in jail back in custody

A Cornwall, Ont., woman who gave birth on the floor of an Ottawa jail cell last fall is back in custody after breaching her release conditions, police say.

A Cornwall, Ont., woman who gave birth on the floor of an Ottawa jail cell last fall is back in custody after breaching her release conditions, police say.

Julie Bilotta, 26, attended a bail hearing this morning in an Ottawa courtroom on two counts of breach of release conditions.

Bilotta, who spoke in a hoarse voice only once to confirm her name, will return to court by video on March 1.

Bilotta gave birth prematurely on Sept. 29, complaining at the time that her pleas for help were ignored. The incident sparked outrage across the country and was described by women's groups as an example of the harsh conditions women behind bars endure in Canada.
