Serena Ryder to headline Canada Day in Ottawa

Juno artist of the year Serena Ryder will headline this year's Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill.

Marianas Trench, Whitehorse, Nadja, Brett Kissel, Vronic DiCaire and Daniel Lavoie also to perform

A pair of2014 Juno winners Ontario folk rocker Serena Ryder and Alberta country singerBrettKissel will perform on Parliament Hill this Canada Day.

The Department of Canadian Heritage announced the lineup Tuesday morning, which also includes Marianas Trench, Nadja,Whitehorse,Terry Kelly,Vronic DiCaire andDaniel Lavoie.

Festivities begin on Parliament Hill at9 a.m. with aflag-raising ceremony, followed bythe Changing of the Guard at9:30 a.m.and a Peace Tower carillon concert at10a.m.

The lineup of artists will performa noon show, which will includea flypast of CF-18 fighter jets and Snowbirds, and an evening show beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Ottawa's Swing Dynamite Dance School will perform1930s- and1940s-styleswing dancing on the east lawn of Parliament Hill from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Honouring veterans

Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official LanguagesShelly Gloverannounced the Canada Day celebration plansin GatineauTuesday morning at theCanadian Museum of History.

The 100th anniversary of the First World War,the 75th anniversary of the SecondWorld War, and the end of the mission in Afghanistan will be highlighted during this year'scelebrations, Glover said.

The celebrations will also mark the150th anniversary of the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences, and Canada's Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

July 1 activities will take place onParliament Hill and Major's Hill Park in Ottawa, and at Jacques-Cartier Park in Gatineau.
