A van was swallowed by a massive sinkhole that formed next to a construction trench on Rideau Street, forcing the evacuation of the Rideau Centre and surrounding businesses, and shutting down roads in a downtown core already clogged by construction.

The road began to collapse around 10:30 a.m.

The sinkhole grew as water gushed in.

And swallowed a van in the process.

The sinkhole wasa massive puddle in the afternoon.

By 6 p.m., cement trucks were lined up to fill the hole.

And it appears it's not the first time Rideau Street has collapsed.
