Rideau Canal gets $39M infrastructure boost

The federal government is giving the Rideau Canal $39.4 million for a long list of infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation to bridges, dams and locks.

The federal government announced$39.4million for a long list of Rideau Canalinfrastructure projects, including the rehabilitation of bridges, dams and locks.

It builds on therecent announcement of $6.6million, bringing the total for the historic site to $46 million.

The funding has been allocated to various projects from Ottawa to Kingston:

  • $7.6 million to repair and replaceconcrete walls between the Ottawa Locks and Dow's Lake.
  • $1.1 million to restore concrete ofHog's Back dam and weir.
  • $3 million to re-pave and fix concrete on fixed bridge that traverses Hog's Back weir.
  • $1.1 millionto repair and improve the Black Rapids dam on the RideauRiver in Ottawa.
  • $2.6 million to rehabilitatetheBurrittsRapids Earth Dam in theMunicipality ofNorth-Grenville.
  • $1.2 million torehabilitate theEdmonds weir, dam and Lock25 intheMunicipality ofMerrickville-Wolford.
  • $3.1 million to rehabilitate theBobs Lake Dam in the community of Bolingbroke.
  • $2.5 million to repair dams from Ottawa to Kingston. There are more than 200.
  • $4.5 million for masonry repairs to locksfrom Ottawa to Kingston. There are 47.
  • $2.1 million to rehabilitate theUpper Brewers Earth Dam in Kingston.
  • $2.3 million to replace the fixed bridge at Kingston Mills, thefirst lockstation at the south end of the canal in Kingston.
  • $2.2 million to repair, repaint and re-pave theKingston Mills Swing Bridge.
  • $1.6 million to rehabilitate theJones Falls Timber Bridge, built in 1883,in theTownship ofRideauLakes.
  • $650,000 to repair or replace the concrete bridge betweenJones Falls Locks and thestone arch dam in theTownship ofRideauLakes.
  • $850,000 to rehabilitate theUpper Nicholsons Earth Dam theMunicipality of Merrickville-Wolford.
  • $775,000torepaintand repave theMerrickville Swing Bridge work which was completed this spring.
  • $800,000 for masonry repairs to theNarrows Lock 35 in the community of Portland.
  • $750,000 to replaceChaffeysSwing Bridgeover Indian Lake ontheRideauCanal work which was completed this spring.
  • $5.3 million to rehabilitate thePoonamailie Dam in the Township of Rideau Lakes. ($4.3 million for this projectwas previously announced.)
  • $2.3 million (previously announced) to repair and improveBlack Rapids Lock 13 in Ottawa.
