Ottawa shooting: Transportation in and out of the capital

The lockdown has been lifted in the Nation's Capital after the shootings at the National War Memorial and Parliament Hill. Here's what you need to know for getting around the city.

The shootings at the National War Memorial and Parliament Hillforced many buildings downtown to go into lockdown and led to police closing off a large portion of the city's core.

Here's what you need to know about getting around Ottawa on Wednesday evening.

The downtown core

The lockdown in the downtown core has been lifted, as Ottawa Police say their investigation "has determined that there no longer exists a threat to public safety in the area."

Peopleare free to leave or return to buildings in the area, but police said Parliament Hill remains off-limits to the public because of the ongoing police investigation. Police said people should also expect an increased police presence in "key areas" of the city.

Road closures

  • Wellington Street remains closed between Bank Street and Sussex Drive.
  • O'Connor remains closed from Wellingtonto Queen Street.
  • Metcalfe and Elgin Streetsremainclosed from Wellington to Albert Street.
  • Queen Street remains closed from Lyon Street to Elgin.

MacKayStreet is also closed from Sussex Drive to Charles Street, and Sussex is closed fromPrincess Avenue to Stanley.

Bridges and other delays

Northbound traffic out ofOttawa and into Quebec for all five interprovincial bridges were heavy and slow according during the day, but those delays have disappeared as the city emptied out in the evening.

Ottawa Airport

The OttawaMacdonald-CartierAirport is operational and heightened vigilance is being exercised. The airport is encouraging individuals to report suspicious activity immediately.

Public transportation

OC Transpo service was detoured out of the core in all directions but saidservice is running along Albert and Slater and said school service will run as normal as students are let go.Service toGatineauis also now running as normal.

Ottawa bus station/Via train station

Both the central bus station servicing Greyhound buses and Via Rail have posted notices on their websites and on Twitter saying anyone who is unable to reach the stations due to lockdowns or who wants to cancel a planned trip to Ottawa today can exchange their tickets without penalty.
