Fatal collision closes 417 in Kanata

Police kept a portion of Highway 417 in Kanata closed on Monday morning after a fatal collision between a car and a tractor-trailer Sunday night.

Police kept a portion of Highway 417 in Kanata closed on Monday morning after a fatal collision between a car and a tractor-trailer Sunday night.

At around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, a 24-year-old man was driving in the eastbound lane of the Queensway, just west of the Castlefrank exit.

Police said the driver didn't slow down in time as he approached the back of a tractor-trailer, just before an area where the highway's lanes are reduced from two to one because of construction.

According to an Ottawa Paramedic Service media release, paramedics arrived five minutes after the two vehicles collided.

The 24-year-old, however, had sustained serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ottawa police said they would keep Highway 417 eastbound closed between the Terry Fox and Castlefrank exits during the Monday morning commute so they could continue their investigation.
