Devontay Hackett, Brandon Volpi murder suspect, arrested in Toronto

An Ottawa teenager wanted in connection with a prom night stabbinghas been charged with second degree murder after he was arrested Friday afternoon in Toronto.

A Canada-wide warrant had been issued for 18-year-old Devontay Hackett after Brandon Volpi, also 18, died of stab wounds outside a downtown Ottawa hotel on June 7.

Ottawa police said Friday that Hackett had been arrested in Toronto around 2:30 p.m. by Toronto policeand charged with one count of second-degree murder.

He is expected to appear in court in Ottawa on Saturday.

Students from three Catholic high schools in south Ottawa had been celebrating after their promsat the Les Suites Hotel on Besserer Street when a fight broke out, according to those who spoke to CBC News at the time.

Witnesses said Volpitried to help get a friend away from the fight when he was attacked.

Brandon's father Danny Volpi said he died in hospital from stab wounds to his throat and chest.

Hacketthad attended St. Pius X High School, one of the three schools which had students staying the night at the hotel, while Volpi was a student at another, St. Patrick's High School.

His death is Ottawa's third homicide of the year.
