It's a two-way battle for the council seat in Beacon Hill-Cyrville.

IncumbentTim Tierneywas first elected to council in 2010. He took the riding in 2014 with 82 per cent of the vote against fourother candidates.

It looked as though Tierneymight become the only councillor this election to win by acclamation, untilMichael Schurter, a real-estate broker, filed his nomination papers hoursbefore the deadline.

What happened in those final hours is now the subject of an investigation by the OPP after Schurter said Tierneycalled him just before that deadline.

Schurter didn't want to comment on what was discussed during that call.

Tierneyis stepping back from his position on the Ottawa Police Services Board while the investigation unfolds.
