Two shootings in Spryfield

Two separate shootings took place in Spryfield Friday evening. One left one man dead; the other left a man in serious condition.

Two separate shootings took place in Spryfield Friday evening, leavingone man dead and another in serious condition.

Police responded to reports of gunfire along Lavender Walk off Greystone Drive at about 8:30 p.m.

A man with gunshot wounds was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim's name has not been released by police, but a new Facebook page identifies him as Brandon Lewis Hatcher, 20.

Hatcher was charged with several offences, including attempted murder, in October 2009 after a shooting that took place in the same area where he was reportedlykilled. Those charges were dismissed.

Earlier in the evening there was another shooting in the Cowie Hill area of Spryfield.

That incident sent a 22-year-old man to hospital, but early reports indicated he had serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said there is nothing to link these two shootings.

"I believe that these victims were selected purposely or they were targeted," said Const. Brian Palmeter. "As far as whether they were related, there's no information that came to light through last night's part of the investigation to suggest that they were."

The investigation into the two shootings continues.
