Soon Herring Cove will be the home of the fastest connection to Europe, ever.

An American company is planning to install a highly advanced telecommunications link between North America and Europe, landing right in the Nova Scotia cove.

Hibernia Networks says it will be the fastest telecommunications cable ever to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

The fiber optic cable will go ashore in Brean, U.K. on the other side.

Tom Burfitt, manager of Hibernia Networks, says cable a much needed boost to transatlantic data capacity. (CBC)

I've seen the technology advance in the last 10 years, it's just amazing, said Tom Burfitt, Canadian network manager for Hibernia Networks. And not just the technology but the need for the technology.

The American company will spend $250 million to run the cable.

They say its a much needed boost to transatlantic data capacity.

Bjarni Thorvardarson, CEO Hibernia Networks, says the last one to be built was 12 years ago.

And there's been a lot of demand for additional capacity because of data centres, web-centrics, the social networks, he said.

5 milliseconds faster

The new cable will be five milliseconds faster than current transatlantic cables, a big deal to stock traders in New York and London who use computer algorithms to buy and sell in micro seconds.

If your computer can do a trade sooner than a competitors computer can do it, you're going to be the winner, said Burfitt.

The site in Herring Cove is already the landing point for cables to Boston andDublin.

Work laying the new 4,600-kilometre cable should be done by next summer.
