Halifax police investigate death of girl in provincial care

A 16-year-old girl in the care of Nova Scotia's Department of Community Services died on Sunday, the province's ombudsman says.

Halifax Regional Police said they were called to a building on the 5000 block of Macara Street in Halifax on Sunday because of the sudden death of the teen.

"Certainly, in this instance, the young person was a child in care," said Christine Delisle-Brennan, the ombudsman for Nova Scotia.

The teen's death was reported to the Nova Scotia Office of the Ombudsman, which independently investigates complaints against provincial and municipal departments.

It's not clear how the 16-year-old girl died.

"We haven't determined the cause of death and the file is currently under the care of our general investigations section," Const. Diane Woodworth with the Halifax Regional Police.

She said the autopsy was done on Tuesday, but the results won't be available for weeks.

The teen's name has not been released.
