Man, 26, dies in brawl

A 26 year-old man is dead and other people have been sent to hospital after a brawl early Thursday in Truro.

A 26-year-old man is dead and other people have been sent to hospital after an apparentbrawl early Thursday in Truro, N.S.

Officers taped off an area of Lyman Street near Victoria Park as part of their investigation.

Neighbours reported hearing a woman screaming during a scuffle around 2 a.m.

Police said paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. Others were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Investigators from the major crimes unit in New Glasgow were helping with the case.

The dead man's name has not been released.

David MacNeil, Truro's police chief, said officers responded to several 911 calls just after 2 a.m.

"Upon arriving, patrol officers discovered that several people had fled. At the scene, there were several injured people who required medical attention and were transported to hospital and there was one male deceased," he said.

The disturbance was loud enough to wake people in homes alongthe street. One residentsaid it sounded like two men and one woman involved in a shouting match.

Police have said little about what happened. It's not knownhow many people were at the house or what weapon was used.

Worried parents

Angela Spence lives a few houses down from the crime scene. She wasconcerned her children wouldsee the police tape and cruisers.

"I woke up this morning and found out," she said. "I won't want my kids around this. No one wants their kids around this."

She said she was looking for a new home.

Raymond Tynes, Truro's deputy mayor, said the incident should not causewider concern.

"What's important [is] the public has to understand that this affects us all, but Truro is a safe town and will always be a safe town," he said.

Police collected multiple weapons at the scene and have several people in custody, thoughno one has yet been charged.
