After more than 60 years, the Spring Garden Road Memorial Library in Halifaxwill be closing its doors in order to prepare for the move to the new library across the street.

The library, located in the heart of downtown Halifax, opened in 1951 as a memorial to the city's casualties in theFirst World War and Second World War.

The library has acted as a hub for a variety of community groups and programs. The 38,000 square-foot building is the largest Halifax Public Library branch in the region, offering more than 228,000 titles.

The librarywill close permanently on Aug. 30 as the branch moves its resources to the new Halifax Central Library at the corner of Spring Garden Road and Queen Street. The new library is expected to open sometime in the late fall.

In the meantime, library users can visit one of the other 13 branches in the Halifax region or users can use the online resources.
