Organizers of the Souls Harbour Rescue Mission's annual Thanksgiving meal are doing it with a twist this year by turning it into a barbeque and dishing out sausages, potato salad, cake and pie.

It's the fourth year for the event and because the kitchen is under renovation, a traditional Thanksgiving meal wasn't possible.

Souls Harbour officials say the missionholds the Thanksgiving meal to allow less-fortunate people in the community to enjoy the holidays.

"When you areon assistance or living in poverty or homeless or near homelessness, you don't have a chance to really enjoy the holidays,"said executive director Michelle Porter.

The event began Saturday at noon in Halifax and the lineup was out the door. About 200 to 300 people were expected to attend.

Patrons also received a gift bag with hygiene items on the way out.

"I think it's a great idea, and we should put it on more often. I've got a lot to be thankful for," said patron Deb Jesseau.
