Snow squall watch issued for northern Cape Breton

Victoria County and Inverness County north of Mabouare under a snow squall watch forSunday evening and into Monday morning.

The special weather statements were issued shortly after 3:30 p.m.

The snow squall could bring more than 15 centimetres of snow to affected areas, with wind gusts up to 60 km/h.

Transit Cape Breton cancelled all service Sunday due to road conditions.

Mostof Cape Breton saw between 15 and 25 centimetres of snow earlySunday morning, with winds gusting up to 70 km/h, butEnvironment Canada lifted snowfall warningsin Richmond County and the Sydney area by 11 a.m.

The warnings remainedin Victoria County and Inverness County north of Mabou, but they were lifted in the early afternoon.

Flurries are expected to become more frequent Sunday eveningas cold west-to-northwest winds settle over the region, according to Environment Canada.

The province's 511 road map showsmost major routes in Cape Breton could see blowing snow over exposed areas into Sunday evening.

Marine Atlantic cancelled its crossings for Sunday between North Sydney, N.S., toPort aux Basques, N.L. All crossings have been rescheduled to Monday.

The annual Groundhog Day celebrations for Sundayat the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park were cancelled ahead of the weather. Shubenacadie Sam took to social media instead, predicting sixmore weeks of winter.
