Paramedic James Duncan Keats denies sexual assault to police

The sexual assault trial of paramedic James Duncan Keats resumed Monday in provincial court in Windsor, N.S.

Police interrogation of suspended paramedic played in court

A paramedic accused of sexually assaulting a 72-year-old woman while responding to a call at her home told police he did nothing wrong, according to his videotaped interrogation.

The trial of JamesDuncan Keats resumed Monday in provincial court in Windsor, N.S., where footage of his statement to police was played.Keats' lawyer is challenging the admissibility of this statement.

Keats told police he gave the woman a hug because she was upset her husband was ill. But he denied assaulting the woman.

"She's a sweet old lady who needs some help,"Keats told police. "I'm scared because I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to go back to work."

The alleged victim accusesKeats of assaulting her in her own home and again during an ambulance ride to hospital on another occasion. She says the paramedic took her up to her room, and fondled and raped her.

The interview with police begins with Keats telling them how he was called to the womans home in May 2013 after a 911 call.

Keats answers the officers questions in a strong voice until about five hours into the interview. At that point, the officer gets confrontational in his approach and accuses Keats of holding back information.

The officer asks Keats if the assault was a one time thing or if he is a sexual predator.

Keats voice drops to a near whisper as he says he didnt do anything wrong. He next tells the officer he doesnt want to talk to them anymore.

The trial will resume November 20 with court dates booked into March of 2015.
