Rainbow flags flying across country as quiet protest against Russian anti-gay legislation

The rainbow flag was raised Friday outside of City Hall in Grand Parade in solidarity for Russias LGBT community and LGBT athletes during the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Each year the rainbow flag flies outside of city hall in Grand Parade to honour Pride week.

It's the latest rainbow flag to be raised in quiet protest of Russian anti-gay propaganda law. Elsewhere in the country, the flag is being raised in St. John's, and at MontrealCity Hall and in Quebec City.

Gay rights activists have asked people to show support for LGBT people in Russia by flying the flag.

Controversial anti-gay legislation recently passed in Russia casts a shadow over the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Googlesdoodle also hasbeenwidely shared this week. The image showed the rainbow flag featuring athlete silhouettes above a quote from the Olympic charter which read:

"The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practising sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play."
