McNabs Island hit by more vandalism, interpretive signs damaged

McNabs Island has been hit by vandals for a second time this year after interpretive signs were severely damaged in the last two weeks.

Cathy McCarthy with the Friends of McNabsIsland Society says the group noticed on Saturdaythat the newly-installed interpretive panels had holes drilled into them and were scratched.

McCarthy says the signs cost the volunteersociety around$15,000.

"Someone has taken something sharp, a knife, and gouged out and scratched all the panels. And they also took a drill over to McNabs and drilled holesin one of the photos on the panels," she said.

In the spring, solar panels from the island's new composting toilet were stolen. No one has been apprehended in connection with the case.

The group plans to report the vandalism to police, McCarthy says.

"Why would someone go over there and damage these interpretive panels that everyone loves?"
