Many Halifax drunk driving cases called in

About a third of drunk driving incidents that led to charges in Halifax over the last couple of months were called in by citizens, according to the latest figures released by the Halifax Regional Police.

Throughout September and October, 126 people95 men and 31 women were charged with impaired driving in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The drivers range in age from 18 to 68.

Of those incidents, 70 were identified by Halifax Regional Police during patrols, 43 were called in by concerned citizens and 13 were identified after a collision had occurred.

Six of the cases involved drug impairment.

Police said for the drunk driving cases, the drivers' breath samples ranged from 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of bloodthe legal limit to 370 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood:

• 41 drivers impaired at twice the legal limit.
• Five drivers impaired at three times the legal limit.
• Two drivers impaired at four times the legal limit.

Halifax Regional Police said 13 drivers refused to provide breath samples and were charged with refusal to provide a sample.

In addition, Halifax Regional Police also issued 41 suspensions for drivers who had a blood alcohol level between 50 and 80 milligrams in 100 millilitres of blood.
