72-year-old hit in crosswalk dies from injuries 6 months later

A 72-year-old man who was hit by a car in Augustwhile he was in a crosswalkhas died from his injuries, Halifax police said Tuesday.

Michael David Caryi of Halifax was first taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the collision Aug. 2 near the Armdale Rotary.

"It is sad, the poor gentleman. He was fighting for a while there, but unfortunately didn't work out," Halifax Regional Police Const. Dianne Woodworth said.

Woodworth would not elaborate on the extent or type of injuries Caryi sustained.

'A horrible situation'

A 21-year-old woman from Halifaxstruck the manwhile driving northbound onto JosephHoweDrive in August,Woodworthsaid.

Police ticketed her for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. That is a fine of $697.50.

"The ticket is appropriate to the incident," Woodworth said. Investigators "reviewed all the information at the time and that was the appropriate course of action."

The driverwill notface other charges now thatCaryihas died almost six months later, she said.

"We're so sorry for the family and the friends," Woodworthsaid. "It's a horrible situation. We're sorry for the loss."
