HMCS Athabaskan sailor facing drug trafficking, firearm charges

A leading seaman on HMCS Athabaskan has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and one count of unsafe storage of a firearm.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service charged the man on Aug. 5. There was an investigation after a routine security check May 5 at the Stadacona entrance to CFB Halifax.

The sailor is alleged to have had 17 grams of cocaine and one gram of methamphetamine in his personal vehicle.

Military police also say they found an improperly stored firearm at his home. It was not a military-issued weapon, they said.

A spokesman for the military police said a date for the court martial has not been set yet.
