Halifax Transit has taken the unusual move of cancelling bus and ferry service after Wednesday's snowstorm shut down much of Halifax.

The city announced late Wednesday morning thatbuses and ferries, including Access-A-Bus vehicles, will not run at all Wednesday.

All service is expected to resume on a regular schedule Thursday.

"A winter storm warning remains in effect for much of Nova Scotia. Snowfall has already surpassed 40 centimetres in many areas and it is still snowing with blowing snow causing poor visibility, " said Halifax Transit in a news release.

"Police and other agencies are continuing to advise residents to stay off the roads, if they can."

Halifax transit may need to operate on a detoured snow plan Thursday, said transit officials.

"Transit supervisors will monitor the weather and road conditions later tonight and tomorrow."
