The city has promoted one of its public works managersto take over as acting superintendent of winter operations.

Trevor Harvie has accepted the offer to become the acting superintendent, winter operations, training and compliance effectiveOct.19, said Brendan Elliott, spokesman for Halifax Regional Municipality.

Former winter operations superintendent Darrin Natolino resigned this month, following a brutal 2014-2015 winter season plagued byunrelenting snow and ice buildup on HRM roads.

Harvieis more than competent to take over the position, Elliott said.

"He'll remain in the position for the entirety of the2015-16 winter season. I can tell you confidently...that he's tailor-made to step right in and replace Darrin Natolino."

Harvie joined the city in 2009, with 16 years of experience in heavy construction, snow removal operations and contract management, Elliott said. Since then he's worked as a supervisor in service truck operations, litter collection and winter operations. He's been most recently employed as senior works supervisor for the capital district for summer and winter operations.

The city will look at the position again in the spring, Elliott said.

"At that point in time, we'll reassess the position and we will then look at whether or not we're going to post it and have people compete for it."
