Halifax bringing in extra equipment to tackle ice

The city of Halifax says new equipment will arrive Sunday to help the ice covered streets.

Weeks of storms and dramatic changes in the temperature have caused thick ice to coat many roads. Now, holes similar to potholes are developing on the ice. On Walnut Street, one hole measured 16 cm deep.

Jennifer Stairs, a spokesperson for the city, says graders and loaders are being brought in to break up and remove the packed ice. She didn't know how much additional equipment was being used Sunday night.

The city says the conditions have made it difficult for plow operators to scrape away slush. A triage list is being created to tackle the streets in the worst condition first, the city said in a statement.

The parking ban will be in effect Sunday overnight again, in order to give snow removal crews room to remove snow and ice.

Parking is banned from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.
