Gene Daniels, NSCAD University associate professor, guilty of voyeurism

An associate professor at NSCAD University has been found guilty of voyeurism after he secretly recorded a former student while she used a bathroom.

Gene Daniels was a teacher at the school in July 2014when he invited a former student to visit a gallery he operated on Cunard Street in Halifax.

While using the bathroom, the 31-year-old woman noticed she was being recorded. The woman left the gallery and reported the incident to the police.

Daniels was charged with voyeurism and his Purcells Cove Road home was searched.

Earlier this year he pleaded not guilty to the charge, but a Halifax provincial court judge delivered the guilty verdict on Tuesday.

"We're still looking at the comments that[the judge] made and the interpretation of the law that he gave. And we'll be looking at that over the next days and weeks to decide how we respond or if we respond," said Daniels's lawyer Don Murray.

In a separate case, Daniels was charged with 10 additional counts of voyeurism after other women came forward to police. Those cases are still before the courts.

NSCAD University said Daniels, an associate professor of foundation studies, was placed on unpaid leave as soon as the school's administration became aware of the first charge.
