Former Port Hawkesbury man in custody in India

A former resident of the Port Hawkesbury, N.S., area arrested in India faces an extradition hearing to Canada, where he faces dozens of sex charges.

A former resident of the Port Hawkesbury, N.S., area arrested in India faces an extradition hearing to Canada, where he faces dozens of sex charges.

Ernest Fenwick MacIntosh, 63, was taken into custody in a New Delhi suburb after Canada's Department of Justice filed an extradition request with the Indian government.

MacIntosh faces 47 sexual assault-related charges connected with an RCMP investigation that began in Port Hawkesbury in 1995, RCMP said Tuesday.

The offences are alleged to have occurred against males in some Nova Scotia communities in the early 1970s.

MacIntosh appeared in court Monday and was remanded to judicial custody until April 16, the Hindu newspaper reported on its website.

The request for extradition will go before the courts in India later this week.

MacIntosh, a telecommunications engineer,has been living in India since 1994.
