Thanks to volunteers and donors from across the province, CBC Feed Nova Scotia Day has raised more than $97,000 and collected nearly 7,000 kilograms of food to support Feed Nova Scotia.

The provincial charity supplies food to 147 agencies, and all donations will help support their work from one end of Nova Scotia to the other.

In a typical month, more than 20,000 people are assisted by food banks across the province, says Feed Nova Scotia spokeswoman Karen Theriault.

"When you've got additional expenses that come with the season, it can be impossible for some families," she said.

Special holiday assistance

About 6,700 households have signed up for special holiday assistance from Feed Nova Scotia. Those families will receive a hamper with a turkey or chicken or ham, along with produce to prepare a holiday meal.

"We hear from so many families and individuals that are calling in looking for help," Theriault said. "They're stressed, they're worried. They're dealing with so many things we can't imagine.

"But even a meal can make a difference. It's that love and sharing that makes the holidays special."

CBC is continuing to collect donations until the end of December. If you haven't donated yet, you can help us get to $100,000 by the new year.

Those on the island can also take part in CBC Cape Breton's Light Up A Life holiday campaign in support of Feed Nova Scotia, which runs until Dec. 23, 2016.

"I love the support and passion we feel from the CBC team as a whole," Theriault said, adding the response from the public has been "really incredible."
