Cape Breton Mayor will not reoffer in fall election

Cape Breton Regional Mayor John Morgan says he will not reoffer in the coming municipal election.

Cape Breton Regional Mayor John Morgan says he will not reoffer in the coming municipal election.

In a statement, Morgan says it's time for a new generation of leaders to carry on the effort.

In the statement, Morgan says serving as mayor for the last 12 years has been an honour and he thanked CBRM residents and municipal staff for all their hard work.

Morgan says moving forward, the CBRM has a lot to look forward to.

"As the region looks to the future, we have (the) opportunity for a renewed economy, centred around Sydney Harbour," Morgan stated.

Morgan is a lawyer by profession but it's not clear whether he will resume that career.

The municipal election will take place on October 20.
