Bluenose II rebuild project managers bid for QEII hospital reno

Five companies have submitted bids to manage the multimillion-dollar redevelopment of a large portion of the Halifax Infirmary site of the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Among them, the project managers for the Bluenose II rebuild.

Five companies have submitted bids to manage the multimillion-dollar redevelopment of the Halifax Infirmary's third and fifth floors.

The bidders include threelocal companies and two national firmsincluding the project manager for the Bluenose II rebuild.

MHPM Project Managers Ltd. won the bid to oversee the Bluenose II rebuild in 2009,a contract valued at $375,000. By 2015, MHPMhad invoiced the Nova Scotia government$1.6 million.

The overall Bluenose project is now approximately $10million over budget.

In March 2016, MHPMchanged its name to Colliers International, according to a news release from the company.

Colliers Project Leader a branch of Colliers International submitted a bid to redevelop the Halifax Infirmary.

Diverse set of bidders

In total, five companies have submitted bids:

  • Colliers Project Leaders
  • Eastin Projects Ltd.
  • Grey Cardinal Management Inc.
  • Pivotal Projects Inc.
  • Stanford Solutions Inc.

The winning company will be responsible "to provide project management services for the successful management of the QEIIRedevelopment 3rd and 5th floor upgrades, and the HantsCommunity Hospital," the contract says.

Thework includes upgrades to the third floor's diagnostic imaging areaand the addition of two new operating rooms on fifth floor.

The overall constructionproject is expected to cost around $10 million.

Local and national experience

In addition to the Bluenose II rebuild, MHPMmanaged the design and construction of the Richmond Olympic Oval for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Another bidder, Eastin Projects Ltd. based in Dartmouth, managed the construction of the NSCCWaterfront Campus and the ColchesterEast HantsHospital in Truro.

Grey Cardinal Management Inc., another Dartmouth-based company,is currently working at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport overseeing the upgrade of public washrooms, office space and securityinfrastructure.

Pivotal Projects Inc. lists many building projects on its website, including hospitals, office towers, retail centres and condominiums. Most of the projects have been builtin Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa.

Stanford Solutions Inc. is a company registered in Nova Scotia with its main officein Dartmouth.

The provincial government will now considereach of the five project managers' proposals, and select the best option based on quoted price andexperience.
