Accused in cross burning surrenders

A Nova Scotia man charged in a cross-burning incident is back in police custody.

Nathan Rehberg, 20, walked into the RCMP Windsor detachment Thursday morning, a day after a judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

RCMP Sgt. Brigdit Leger said Rehberg had two friends with him for support.

Rehberg was granted bail on March 2 and ordered to stay with his grandparents on Old Brooklyn Road.

But on Wednesday his grandparents revoked the $5,000 surety they had posted. They didn't give a reason.

Leger said Rehberg will remain in custody until his trial in November unless he can arrange new bail conditions.

Rehberg and his 19-year-old brother Justin are accused of setting a cross on fire outside the home of an interracial couple in Poplar Grove on Feb. 21, and yelling racial slurs at the terrified family inside.

The Rehbergs are charged with criminal harassment, public incitement of hatred, mischief and uttering threats.
