Small wildfire near Ross River airport expected to be put out today

Three new wildfires were sparked in the Tatchun Fire Region of Yukon on Tuesday, one of them near the Ross River airport.

Human-caused fire one of three discovered Tuesday

Three new wildfires were sparked in the TatchunFire Region of Yukon on Tuesday, one them nearthe Ross River airport.

Yukon Wildland Fire Management and the volunteer fire department responded to the human-caused fire near the Ross River airport Tuesday afternoon. It has been contained to a small area and it's expected to be extinguished today.

Lightning caused another fire about 21 kilometres west of Carmacks. It was contained last night and is also expected to be extinguished today.

The third fire, 31 kilometres southeast of Ross River along the Ketza Mine Road, was human-caused and it too is expected to be put out today.

There have been 29 fires in the territory this season, burning about15,279 hectares. That compares to last year at this time when 179 fires had burned 103,462 hectares.

Fire officials are reminding people to be vigilant and properly extinguish any fires they light.
