Frame Lake Trail is safe, say Yellowknife officials

The City of Yellowknifeis promising 12 new streetlights on the Frame Lake Trail as part of a community safety plan.

The announcement came as part of the second public safety forum since a string of sexual assaults in the downtown area last summer.

The RCMP, Department of Justice, Department of Health, and the City say they've made strides since the fall, increasing bike patrols and cutting back brush along the Frame Lake Trail to improve visibility.

Justice Minister Dave Ramsaysays Yellowknifers can help by getting involved in Crime Stoppers.

"It brings together the police services, the media, the community, in the fight against crime, and I think it is very important that the NWT chapter is up and running."

The health minister says another part of community safety is making sure homeless people have somewhere to go. Glen Abernethy says he's working to reopen the city's day shelter by the fall.

"We are hoping for September, but a significant amount of work needs to be done," he said.

That work includes finding a building andan operator.
