Yellowknife considers bike lane on Franklin Avenue

The City of Yellowknife is considering adding a bike lane to the city's main street.

The idea would be to shrink existing traffic lanes on Franklin Avenue and create another lane dedicated to bicycle commuters.

Jeremy Armitage with the transportation issues committee made a presentation to city council Monday night.

"We were looking at options that didn't incur significant cost and didn't require massive infrastructure," he said. "Franklin really lends itself to that. Ideally we're like to see bike lanes throughout the city."

City councillor Adrian Bell asked if the parking lane on Franklin Avenue could be converted to a bike lane during rush hours.

Other councillors suggested cyclists would be safer travelling along the Frame Lake trail. However Armitage said that's not always safer for people walking on the trail, when cyclists are travelling about 15 km/h hour faster than them.
