Wykes Your Independent Grocer grand opening in Whitehorse today

The landmark bright yellow Extra Foods on 4th Avenue closed its doors in September for renovations.

It officially opened this morning at 8 a.m. with a bread cutting ceremony under the new banner of WykesYour Independent Grocer.

The new store will have a bakery, a butcher and lots of pastries and cakes. It will also include lots of "meal solutions" or items you can take home to heat up for supper.

Franchisee Mark Wykesis excited.

He says demographics are changing. "People are looking for something more exciting than just buying a box of beans or cereal off the shelf."

More than a hundred people were waiting outside the store when it opened. Wykes was there shaking each customer's hand and welcoming them to the new store.
