Whitehorse councillor Kirk Cameron resigns after meeting

City councillor Kirk Cameron resigned following last night's council meeting, saying that he was doing so on principle following the termination of two senior city officials last week.

Cameron says resignation was due to firing of two senior city officials

Whitehorse city councillor Kirk Cameron unexpectedlyresigned his position after last night's council meeting, a move he says was designed to draw attention to recent firings at city hall.

Last week, senior city directors Robert Fendrick and Brian Crist were fired. Cameron didn't speak to details of their removal, except to say that "I just fundamentally believe that this is not the step that should be taken.

"I think it's a necessary statement that I have to make to the people who put me in office," says Cameron. "To say that this this isn't the way it should be done."

City manager Christine Smith won't say why Fendrick and Crist were fired. She refused comment on Cameron's resignation.

Cameron says he doesn't want to resign, but that it's the only way for him to stick to his principles.

"I can't speak for the rest of council," he says. "It's a personal call on my part, and I want Whitehorse residents to knowthe people who put me in office to knowthat in the strongest of terms I need to step out, and make it known that I don't agree with it."

Cameron says he ran for office over three years ago because council can do many good things for Whitehorse, and that "sometimes you have to step up and help your community."

He says he doesn't know what his next move will be.
