South Klondike Highway, Chilkoot Trail open again in Yukon

The Klondike Highway south of Carcross, Yukon is now open for most of the day, after officials closed it following a rock slide Friday morning.

According to the Yukon Highways' website, that portion of the highway will open at 8 a.m. PT every day until further notice, and then close at midnight. It's reduced to one lane as well, so drivers should expect a 20- to 30-minute delay in their travel plans.

The highway was initially closed Friday when a rock slide covered the roadbetween Carcross and Skagway at kilometre 58, around Tutshi Lake. At the time, the rocks wereunstable and officials weren't sure how long it would take to clean up the debris.

Chilkoot Trail also reopened

Flooding on the Taiya River forced the Klondike National Parks Serviceto temporarily shut down the Chilkoot Trail on Friday as well.

But on Sunday,parks advisory has reopened the trail with precautions. It says water could still be "knee- to thigh-deep" during the first five kilometres of the trail.
