Second Yukon outfitter taken to court

The Yukon government is taking a second hunting company, Mervyn's Yukon Outfitting,to court over a cabin it built on a remote lake.

Earlier this month, the government began legal action against Bonnet Plume Outfitters over alodge it built on the Bonnet Plume River in the summer without permission.

In both cases, the government is asking for a court order to remove the buildings.

Mervyn's cabin is on Crown land on the shores ofIttlemit Lake, northwest of Whitehorse.

In an interview Wednesday, owner Tim Mervyn admitted to building the cabin butsays his company has used the site for years.

"It's not a place we go every year, but it's a place we've been going consistently and we're continuing with business as usual," Mervynsaid.

"There is no process and never has been a process since 1986 to apply for sites. And my particular site is an existing site."

His new cabin is located at one of many untitled campsites he's been using for his hunting business, he says.

The Yukon government recently developed a process to enable hunting outfitters to apply for camp leases. Mervyn says he did not apply because he thought the process was voluntary.

Mervyn says he hopes to settle the matter out of court.
