A New Mexico man has survived paddling over Alexandra Falls in a kayak. The waterfall thunders over a 114-foot drop near Hay River, Northwest Territories. By going over it and living Ed Lucero, 36, set a new world record.

On Thursday, Lucero, a professional kayaker, deliberately paddled his tiny boat over falls. His friend Trip Jennings was standing by with a safety rope and a camera.

"I saw Ed leave the eddy above the fall and paddle right into it," Jennings says. "It's always scary watching the run of a waterfall that big, because you don't know what's going to happen. I saw him disappear. I gave him an eight-count. I didn't see him come up. I was getting worried when he popped up out of harm's way and he was fine."

Jennings says there's a small fraternity of adventure kayakers who are always on a quest for big water. But he admits it's unusual to witness a paddler on a drop as big as Alexandra Falls.

According to Jennings, Lucero was successful because of his experience and strategy. The descent was recorded from four camera angles and will be part of a video called "Bigger than Rodeo."
