Nunavut women to walk 250km for cancer research

Six women will train and prepare for a rugged walk from Umingmaktok, Nunavut, to Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, in support of cancer research.

One of the women walking is Nunavuts Commissioner, Edna Elias. She came up with the idea and says its part of her job to promote healthy living.

"Now I'm at the point in my life where I'm feeling physically, mentally and spiritually fit to take on this challenge, and so I mentioned it to a sister and a friend and they said 'We'll come with you," said Elias.

The women plan to start their walk in May.

It's about 250 kilometres from Umingmaktok to Cambridge Bay, across the ice on Coronation Gulf.

Elias has called the walk Women in Action - Steps of Hope. Money raised will be donated to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
