Shelby Angalik to carry Nunavut's flag at 2016 Arctic Winter Games

Over 180 athletes and coaches will head to the Arctic Winter Games in Nuuk as part of Team Nunavut, butthe trip will carry special significance for one Arviat teen selected to carry her territory's flag.

Shelby Angalik, 17, was announced as Nunavut'sflag bearer for the 2016 Games earlier this week. Angalik, a wrestler,will compete in the 52kilogram and under category. She'salready anaccomplished competitorat the Arctic Winter Games, winning two silver ulus in Fairbanks, Alaska, in both freestyle and Inuit wrestling.

"I'm so excited," she said. "I feel so honoured to be able to represent Nunavut, and I just can't wait."

Although Angalik is accomplished as a wrestler she's won three territorial championships in a row her selection is also a reflection of her accomplishments off the mat. She teaches literacy skills at JohnArnalukjuak high school, where she is in Grade 12, and is also very active in Arviat's local drama club.

Five young women and five men make up Nunavut's wrestling team for the 2016 Arctic Winter Games.

In 2014, wrestlers from Nunavut took home nine ulus nearly a third of the territory's total of 32.
