Nunavut fishing derbies offer big prizes

Many Nunavut communities are holding fishing derbies this weekend, with large prizes of cash or all-terrain vehicles.

Arviat cod derby's top prize is $18,000 and an ATV

Many Nunavut communities are holding fishing derbies this weekend, withlarge prizes of cash or all-terrain vehicles.

In Arviat,participants are vying to bring in the largest Arctic cod for a top prize of $18,000 and an ATV.

Organizer Peter Suwaksiork says people from all over Nunavut plan to come to Arviat and compete for the biggest cod.

"The first prize is going to be a four wheeler Yamaha with a trailer and that has not arrived to town yet," he said in Inuktitut.

Suwaksiork said the health centre is also holding a sculpin fishing derby in the community with a prize ofan ATV.

In Whale Cove, the prize for the person who catches the largest lake trout is $10,000. And in Hall Beach, the top fish will bring in $4,000.
