Northern crime declines, StatsCan reports

Crime rates dropped across the three northern territories in 2005, a report by Statistics Canada released Thursday says.

The North's downward trend is in keeping withthe national figures, which show a five per centdrop overall.

Nunavut had the biggest decreaseat 11 per cent while the Yukon's rate dropped by five per cent.

The booming Northwest Territories had the smallest decline at two per cent.

The report also shows that Nunavut had more violent crimes than property crimes while the Northwest Territories had about the same amount of both.

The Yukonhad twice as many property crimes as violent crimes.
